Development of Sitting and Reaching in 5- to &Month-Old Infants

چکیده
Three studies are reported, investigating changes in body engagement by 5to 6-month-old infants as they reach for ObJects in the environment. Infants are distinguished and compared based on their relative ability to maintain a sitting posture without any external body support. The first study demonstrates that manual reaching by sitter infants is coordinated with forward leamng of the trunk, whereas reaching by nonsitters is not. The second study demonstrates that nonsitter infants provided with hip support also show signs of a coordination between reaching of the hand and forward leaning of the trunk. The third study compares nonsitter, nearsitter, and sitter infants as they reach for multiple objects spread across their prehensile space. Results demonstrate expansion in the mapping of infants’ prehensile space and hand use as a function of self-sitting ability. The reported results are discussed as expressions of the interaction between the development of postural, perceptual, and action systems in infancy.

Sit happens: Does sitting development perturb reaching development, or vice versa?
The development of reaching and of sitting during the first year of life is typically studied as separate yet related behaviors. Interestingly, very soon after learning to reach, 4-7-month-old infants start coordinating their arms with their trunk and legs for sitting. In this longitudinal study, we focused, for the first time, on how infants learn to use their arms for the dual tasks of reachi...
متن کاملSit to Talk: Relation between Motor Skills and Language Development in Infancy
Relations between walking skills and language development have been reported in 10- to 14-month-old infants. However, whether earlier emerging motor milestones also affect language skills remains unknown. The current research fills this gap by examining the relation between reaching and sitting skills and later language development, respectively. Reaching and sitting were assessed eight times, ...

Background The initial years of life particularly the first two years are regarded as the most important brain development period. This study attempted to determine the effect of care package on motor development in 12-month-old infants in Saqqez-Iran. Materials and Methods:This study was a clinical trial conducted in 2016 on 70 infants of 12 months of age selected randomly in intervention and...
متن کاملBrain reorganization as a function of walking experience in 12-month-old infants: implications for the development of manual laterality
Hand preference in infancy is marked by many developmental shifts in hand use and arm coupling as infants reach for and manipulate objects. Research has linked these early shifts in hand use to the emergence of fundamental postural-locomotor milestones. Specifically, it was found that bimanual reaching declines when infants learn to sit; increases if infants begin to scoot in a sitting posture;...
